Evidence-based practice (EBP) became the buzzword in healthcare with the signing of the ACA into law in 2010 (Laureate, 2018). EBP is using the best information we have to make informed decisions for our patients. EBP involves three components: what is the best evidence, what is the clinician’s judgment, and what is the patient’s preference? The goal of EBP is to improve processes and increase good patient outcomes (Laureate, 2018).
The organization I selected for this assignment is the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The ANCC credentials recognize both organizations and individuals that promote nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. The ANCC has several programs: ANCC Accreditation, ANCC Certification Center, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program, and ANCC Pathway to Excellence.
The ANCC-accredited organizations provide nurses with the knowledge and skill to help improve patient outcomes. The ANCC Certification provides nurses with the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise in their specialty area. The ANCC Magnet Status is the most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. The ANCC Pathway to Excellence recognizes an organization’s commitment to creating a positive nursing environment (ANCC, n.d).
EBP is supported throughout the ANCC website. Each of their programs is focused on recognizing organizations and individuals that seek to provide quality, safe care. I believe the ANCC’s work is grounded on EBP. For example, the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program is based on 5 components: transformational leadership (senior leadership creates a vision for the future), structural empowerment (strong relationships with community and well-developed processes), exemplary professional practice (strong nursing, patient, and family relationships), new knowledge, innovation, and improvements (ethical and professional responsibility to contribute to patient care through improvements and knowledge), and empirical quality results (processes that increase good patient outcomes) (ANCC, n.d). The information I discovered on the ANCC’s website has changed my perception of their organization. I have gained a better understanding that they are more than just a certification organization.

Health Care is constantly evolving with the times. The evidenced-based practice utilizes current research in order to improve the health and safety of patients while reducing cost and variations in health outcomes. It is applied problem-solving, combining best practices from the latest medical literature with clinical experience. Evidence-based practice enhances health care quality, improves patient outcomes, reduces cost, and empowers clinicians (Melnyk & Finout-Overholt, 2018).
This could otherwise be known as the Quadruple aim, which is centered around four specific goals, which are “improving the individual experience of care, improving the health of populations, reducing cost of health care and improving the experience of providing care” (Sikka,R., Morath, J.M., & Leape, L., 2015, p. 608)
The goal of EBP is to utilize current knowledge and connect it with patient preference and clinical expertise to standardize and improve care processes and patient outcomes. However, the implementation of EBP is still not the norm in many health care systems across the United States and the globe because clinicians lack competency (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). The adoption of specific EBP competencies for nurses and advanced practice nurses who practice in real-world healthcare settings can assist institutions in achieving high-value, low-cost evidence-based health care (Melnyk et al.,2014)
Best Practice only occurs when staff continually ask questions about treatment and care, have the resources and skills necessary to search for and appraise research evidence, implement the evidence in practice, and evaluate its effectiveness (Dawes et al., Hockenberry et al.,)
The health care organization I reviewed is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. This organization was founded in 2013 by the merger between the American Academy of nurse practitioners and the American college of nurse practitioners with a unified way to network and advocate their issues. The AANP represents the interest of more than 248,000 licensed NPs in the United States. AANP provides legislative leadership at the local, state, and national levels, advancing health policy; promoting excellence in practice, education and research; and establishing standards that best serve NP patients (AANP, n.d.b)
The mission of AANP is to empower all nurse practitioners to advance quality health care through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership (AANP, n.d.a)
This health care organization is grounded in EBP because it shows that EBP strategies allow nurse practitioners to translate research findings into clinical practice. When researching the site to find information regarding the organization, I found it to be user-friendly while providing a wide variety of information about research opportunities for its members and students.
It has changed my perception of the organization because conducting research is new to me. Because of this, I didn’t know the process of initiating research. However, the AANP provides a wide variety of information about research opportunities to its members. The AANP provides the resources and support that you need to conduct research and improve evidence-based practice
