Research question

Are there Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) in medical facilities.

Developing a formula for an answerable, researchable question that addresses your need will make the search process more effective (Walden Universitya,2021). One such formula is the PICO(T) format.

P-Population and problem

Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) arise from the care in which the patient’s and nurses’ health are compromised (Walden Universityb,2021).

I–Intervention

Nurses would need to have the correct gear while attending to the patients. Despite the health facilities being overwhelmed.

C–Comparison

When it comes to contagious diseases, it has been said that PPEs are very effective in terms of protection.

O–Outcome

HCAIs would be reduced when the rates of infections reduce drastically. In addition, they would be observed by the patients and professionals being surveyed to adhere to the IPAC and CDC approach, which would be proven to be more cost-effective.

T–Timeframe

Duration would be a mode of showing that the systems that have been put in place are working effectively.

Boolean operators

AND, OR, and NOT.

A topic would be able to contain multiple search terms. This would assist in refining the searches that are being made (Walden Universityc,2021). It is through these searches that one can be able to come up with the best alternatives.

Clinical issue of interest

Nurses are observed to be getting medical conditions after being exposed to patients. The risks that are present for health

Rigor and effectiveness PICO(T)

The database would be more effective by adding * Asterix, # hash and? Question mark. They can assist significantly in refining the search on the Walden University database (Walden Universityd,2021). It would be based on adding keywords such as

* Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs)

# Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs)

%% Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs)

^^ Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs)

Thus, it would be able to bring out a clearly defined scope.

Guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.

Limitations of the study

The study utilized the internet to search for sources. Hence, downtime would limit the rate at which the searches were being conducted. Nevertheless, the study was able to use offline databases to search for the topics available for the study.

Recommendations

Using modern search operators would be able to assist in searching the PICOT issues.

Offline databases need to be enhanced and also used in research institutions.

Clinical issue

One of the departments that receive numerous patients in a day is the emergency department. Individuals experience various emergencies ranging from normal injuries to accidents that affect their everyday activities. Informatics is a powerful tool used by healthcare givers to handle patients in emergencies. Informatics makes it easier to understand the patients (Davies, 2011, p.76). For example, when a code is called, the healthcare giver can understand the demographics of the patient, the medications used by the patient or whether the patient requires resuscitation or not. Such is vital because it helps reduce medical errors.

Boolean Operators and Search Results

The clinical search on the Google scholar database indicates that there are 30,200 articles related to the clinical issue. The number changed gradually upon narrowing down the search results by focusing on the specific terms via the Boolean operators (Library of Congress. (n.d.). The use of “AND” as the major Boolean operator narrowed down the study to focus on the specific keywords. The articles were reduced to 10,000. Other operators used were “NOT” and “OR”.

Search Strategies

It is important to understand the search rule and any peculiars within different databases. One of the approaches to increasing the effectiveness and rigor of database research is the study’s conceptualization and appropriate vocabularies (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018, p.35). The two techniques ensure that the investigation is limited to the specific details required in the outcomes. Another strategy is combining concepts and terms via Boolean operators to ensure that the search is limited to the clinical issue of interest. If the techniques mentioned above are ineffective, one may opt to change the strategy of searching databases. Also, one may opt to search more than a single database to ensure they have as many details as possible.
