Significance of Diversity and Multicultural Perspectives within Public Health

Diversity refers to the differences that exist between people. Regardless of the setting, the most common differences include religion, socioeconomic status, race, sexual orientation, background, and gender (“Cultural Competence in Health Care: Is it important for people with chronic conditions? – Health Policy Institute”, 2021). Public health and education are areas where practical concerns of diversity come into play and are addressed differently.

Similarly, multiculturalism addresses the same differences but from an in-depth perspective. It is a complex issue that covers more than the disparities addressed as it addresses inclusivity, understanding, respect, and unequal power in society. These disparities greatly influence individual perceptions of their place in society, but with significant changes in public health, access to care has improved due to diversity and multicultural structures.

Diversity and multiculturalism are used interchangeably in different contexts. The terms are also applied to various fields, specifically human resource management, public health, and public education. As much as diversity and multiculturalism are used in similar situations, their meanings are different. Diversity and multiculturalism issues are common in societies made up of people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, as this prompts differential access to healthcare services and opportunities.

We must consider diversity and multicultural perspectives in public health practice and research because of the increasingly high population disparities. Public health should adopt cultural competency to serve culturally diverse populations and promote overall health (Kirmayer, 2019). As much as cultures exhibit differences, the same is relayed in public health and education.

People from various racial divides and ethnic backgrounds report being treated differently because of their orientation. As a result, diversity and multicultural perspectives change and shift to accommodate health outcomes that reflect upon their orientation in society.

Public health interventions are essential for public health and patient outcomes. Therefore, considering multiple perspectives before developing public interventions is necessary because it allows management systems to define health problems and causes effectively (Kirmayer, 2019). In addition, multiple perceptions clarify which contextual factors are manageable and which have the greatest scope for change. As a result, it becomes easy to initiate a change mechanism and deliver on it while gathering adequate evidence to support evaluation and implementation.
