Solution

Discuss how functional patterns help a nurse understand the current and past state of health for a patient. Using a condition or disease associated with an elimination complexity, provide an example.

How Functional Patterns Help a Nurse Understand the Current and Past State of Health of a Patient

Functional health patterns provide a holistic model for the assessment of a patient’s data. A comprehensive assessment and evaluation precede an effective diagnosis of a clinical condition. Establishing a patient’s functional health patterns involves close interaction with a patient, which is crucial for an effective assessment and evaluation.  As a result, a nurse can identify an appropriate treatment regimen based on evidence from the assessment.

Equally, functional health patterns enable patient-centered care since patients are closely involved in their treatment. Preferences, attitudes, culture, and socioeconomic circumstances of patients and their families are all important aspects of patient-centered treatment (Fix et al., 2018) and are captured in functional pattern interviews. Therefore, functional health patterns provide significant nursing aspects for nurses’ roles and the patients’ wellbeing.

Consider chronic renal failure, a chronic and gradual loss of kidney function leading to the inability to eliminate body wastes. During initial and subsequent clinical assessments, a nurse needs to evaluate a person’s functional health patterns to establish risk factors and appropriate clinical management. Chronic renal failure is associated with dysfunctional kidney affected and exacerbated by lifestyle factors.

For example, chronic renal failure is caused by diabetes and high blood pressure, which are known to be influenced by unhealthy eating habits, overweight, and obesity (Vaidya & Aeddula, 2019).

In this sense, a nurse should determine the associated risk factors and/or establish an appropriate eating plan, activity and exercise, nutritional-metabolic, and health promotion activities for patients with renal failure. Through a close examination of these patterns, it will be easier for the nurse to develop a clear baseline of the patient and any evident changes.

For example, the kind of food the patient eats and appropriate excessive to help eliminate excessive body waste. If the patient eats much junky food with limited physical activity, it is advisable to stop. Besides, the patient should avoid sugary or fatty food, which could further complicate the kidney’s function. Consequently, the patient can achieve positive health through appropriate mitigating measures.
