Semester Writing Project: Technical ReportFor your semester writing project, you may choose from the following topics: Write or revise an instruction manual, personalizing the manual for a specific group ofusers. Your project should include an extended user profile. Address a problem or issue in a particular business, industry, or discipline. Your reportproject could (re)solve the problem/issue or propose a means of (re)solving it. Write or revise an employee handbook for a particular company whose employeeshave experienced problems with the management or with employees followingcompany policies and procedures. Plan and prepare the curriculum for a program in an academic area (for example, youmight plan a graduate program for a department that currently offers only anundergraduate degree). Write a feasibility or recommendation report. Write or revise a lab report for a class.Your report project, then, may be a feasibility study, an empirical research report, amanual, or a policy/procedure handbook.Feasibility/Recommendation ReportIf you choose to write a feasibility or recommendation report, you have the option ofchoosing from one of the topics listed below or creating a topic of your own with myapproval: Is a local area network feasible for a local business? Which is a better investment for treasury bills or a money market mutual fund? What are the design needs for the sorting room at the Kingsville, TX UPS? Conduct a feasibility study for a business. For example, a business is considering relocating;you could study the options available and then recommend a location. What resources are available on the Internet to support research in your discipline? (You maycategorize by type or recommend particular ways to use the net for specific inquiries.)Look for a project with practical application; that is, be able to define how a specific readerwill use your report. The best projects are real and “local” rather than theoretical. Don’task huge questions, such as whether universal health care is feasible in the United States.This is not an argumentative source-supported research paper. Rather, practicaltopics that relate to your major, work, professional organization(s), or field ofspecialization are entirely appropriate for this assignment.ResearchYou should to use at least two types of research: 1) empirical: letter of inquiry,questionnaire, survey, or interview and 2) secondary: Internet and/or library research. Ifyour project is an analysis of uses of the Internet in your discipline, one type may suffice.FormatYour document should include the elements standard to technical reports: Transmittal correspondence Title page with descriptive abstract Table of contents List of illustrations (if you have more than two visuals or graphics) Glossary (if necessary) Executive summary Introduction Sections organized by sectional title pages that include advance organizers Visuals (tables, graphs, drawings, photos); at least one visual is required Appropriate documentation, according to the style used in your field Appropriate supplements (e.g., copies of research instruments, such as survey forms)The body of the report, including introduction and conclusions, will be at least 8-13 singlespaced pages, excluding all front and end matter and visuals.
