What is a hazard?
A hazard is any way damage, harm or anything affecting health at work. Hazards can be caused by any health effects or by organizations as property or equipment. What is a risk?
A risk is if a person has a change that they will be harmed due to a hazard. Factors that can affect the risk are; how much the person has been affected by the hazard and how severe the effects were. Evaluate the Risk:

For evaluating the risk, the hazards have to be spotted first. By law you have to do everything “reasonably practicable” to stop anyone in the workplace from getting an injury while using equipment. For example when using a pillar drill a plastic transparent cover could be used to protect the user from hotel metal spinning back of the metal, and if goggles were worn then the metal could burn through the goggles. So this could prevent any further hazards from wearing goggles, and further prevention of the hot drill bits going in people eyes or burning the user’s skin. Safety Signs:

Safety signs need to be used all around the working area such as an emergency escape sign need to be luminous and be able to be seen, so a stand out colour is green. Also the first aid signs need to be the same green s both of them are equally important as fires and a first aid box could help in the event of someone getting injured using the machinery. These signs are called “safe condition sign”. Fire Exit signs also need to be a luminous sign which can be sign all over the workplace they should be red and should be seen all over the workplace. These signs should provide information on how to get out of the building, in the event of a fire. Also the sign should provide information of where the nearest fire-fighting equipment is and how to use the equipment. There are other types of signs such as “mandatory sign” which is a sign describing behaviour, which are required to be blue. Another type of sign is “prohibition sign” is a sign most likely to be a health and safety risk and this sign should be in red so people can see. Another sign is a “warning sign” which is also a warning to health and safety; these signs should be in amber or yellow.

Identify Exits:
An exit needs to be a route that can be identified that must be unobstructed that allows employees a safe exit from the building. There are 3 parts in an exit route; the route leading to the exit, the area that is separated from the surrounding area to provided protection from the dangers of the building and finally the exit discharge which will lead to the public way or space with easy access for other services. There must be a certain amount of exits in the workplace but this does depend on the size and configuration of the building and number of employees. A workplace must have 2 exits that can be used for an emergency; the exits must be on different sides of the building as an accident (e.g. a fire) could cut of the route to one of the exits. These exit routes must be permanent. Take steps to control risks:

To control the risks in the workplace, first of all things need to be considered which may cause a hazard or harm to any employees or public. Steps can be taken to remove what would have caused the hazard in the first place, like a tool or broken equipment. Things like safety glass and soundproofing can be used to stop a hazard and protect workers. More risks could be eliminated by more training being offered to new members of staff, or changing roles. The least desirable action that could be used is for employees to wear PPE such as safety boots and HI visible tops, this is because the company has to pay a lot to get there employees PPE if they have a large workforce also if there is no other ways that they can improve equipment or working ways. Wear adequate PPE:

PPE stand for personal protective equipment. This is to protect workers from any hazard or safety risks, equipment such as safety goggles, helmets and steel toe capped boots. PPE is only used after the site has been assessed and has made sure it fits the purpose, also only if the employees know how to use the equipment properly. For adequate PPE employees should wear equipment they have chosen so they are more comfortable with wearing the PPE, also must be good quality equipment because the products will last longer and be more reliable. Employees must be trained on how to use the equipment and to explain why it’s needed, and how important the protection is. For example on a construction site a safety helmet is needed because in
case of falling objects flying overhead, added extras can be added to a safety helmet such as goggles to protect eyes also. Also equipment such as protected boots with the steel toe caps and penetrate resistant materials, this is good on a construction site because can stop items falling and damaging or cutting the employees feet, also can be used with the correct sole to stop slips at work which may cause an injury to the worker. Risk Assessments:

The first step of any risk assessment is to evaluate the hazards, depending on what type of work there is, there are many different hazards that needed to be taken into consideration. Also on a construction site it may not always just be the employees getting harmed, it could be the public, contractors or visitors. There are many risks that can happen every day and it is very unlikely to be able to get rid of all the risks from a workplace. The risk assessment should only include what risks are major and can cause a big problem to the workers. In any risk assessment it is a key point to make sure that the layout of the risk assessment is clear and simple to read so that the same mistake can’t be made in the workplace which could cause a risk. Long term solutions should be considered to make sure that there is a minimal risk which can affect a worker to become ill or be at risk. However when the company chooses to upgrade their equipment they will have to produce a new risk assessment and this is very important because it will minimise the risks and issues of the employees using the equipment. Following all safety procedures when carrying out tasks:

When employees are carrying out tasks in the workplace it is very important that they follow all the safety procedures to sure that they are safe from any risks. On the construction site it is important that the workers wear a safety helmet when materials are moving over head in case that something may fall and injure an employee, this is a safety procedure because the site manager will make sure that all employees are fully equipped when this is happening. So from listening and taking note of the safety procedures workers on the construction site will be more equipped with safer items of clothing and can reduce the injury of a risk.
