Question description

Many do not realize how cooking products such as pots and pans can expose many chemicals to our daily meals. A couple of chemicals found in pots and pans that I would consider harmful for everyday use is aluminum, Teflon, and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA). Aluminum is all found in cookware and can add about 1 to 2 mg of aluminum to the meal especially when cooking acidic ingredients. Aluminum is the third most abundant element in the earth’s crust and can be found in the air, water and soil (Vadim, 2017). The more the pot has been used and pitted has great amount of aluminum exposed. In many places such as Germany, France, Belgium, Britan Switzerland, Hungary and Brazil the sale of aluminum cookware are prohibited. Non-stick pans can expose Teflon and PFOA when scratched, chipped, and flaked. When pans overheat at about 500 degrees the breakdown of these harmful chemicals begins and smaller chemicals fragments are released and end up in our meal. In order to prevent ourselves from these chemicals it is important to look at pans that make out of safe non-toxic materials like carbon steel, ceramic, lava rock, porcelain enamel, or tempered glass, and stainless steel.
