1 WORKING TITLE
MOTIVATION AND PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT : A CASE STUDY OF UK AND NIGERIAN RETAIL SECTOR
2 ABSTRACT
This research dissertation is aimed at determining the impact of motivation on performance in the retail industry, a case study of Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The result will reveal there is a relationship between motivation and performance, the research will collate data from variable such as training, management recognition, job security , promotion and increased salaries and wages would motivate the worker to better performance.
This research will also examine why its difficult to motivate the Nigerian worker, amongst which are greed, which is pervasive in Nigeria, lack of trust for the system, belief that hard work is never rewarded, incompetence, corruption , low social values, get rich quick attitude, social economic problems and extended family.
Also the research will try to find out if the Nigerian worker would be more motivated by financial rewards, than any other reward item, however , financial reward alone is not enough to motivate the Nigerian worker to improved performance. It is also encouraging to note that workers perceive growth and promotion in their company as contingent on personal effort and hard work.
In order to develop an in-depth understanding of the perception of each worker on what motivates them, I have chosen to carry out an exploratory case study on workers of ocado.com in UK and shop-rite in Ngeria. My findings will contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of retail business in both countries, especially in the areas of Market conditions, excellent/quality movements in particular, the emphasis on productivity through people, technological developments, organisational restructuring/change, government policies and inadequacies of appraisal.
Findings will be obtained through questionnaires, which included open ended questions and fixed alternative responses and oral interviews.
