Think back to Lab 2 where we went over the SCIENTIFIC METHOD.

Review:
1. Start with THEORY.
2. Generate a HYPOTHESIS.
3. Collect DATA.
4. Draw CONCLUSIONS.
5. End with THEORY evaluations and revisions.

How does this translate to an APA RESEARCH REPORT?

APA research reports designate sections for us to write up our research process and findings!

• Introduction  The purpose of the paper. Here, we highlight the THEORECTICAL PERSPECTIVES OF INTEREST, and clearly state our HYPOTHESIS.

• Method  The specifics of the experiment. Here, we discuss HOW DATA WAS COLLECTED. We identify who participated/was studied, what materials were used to conduct the study, and how we collected the data (procedure).

• Results  The findings. Here, we write up what analyses we used to assess the DATA and what were the final results. In this section, we can begin to assess if we did or did not support our hypothesis.

Title
Write a few sentences introduction that provides background information about staged versus continuous theoretical perspectives on development. Using Piaget’s Staged Theory, what would we predict about children’s friendship development? (Hint: Hypothesis). See PowerPoint.
Method
Participants
Briefly describe the interviewed children using PowerPoint information. How many were there? How many in each age group? How many boys (per age group)? How many girls (per age group)? How were they selected? Indicate if informed consent was obtained before the interview.
Materials
In one sentence, list the materials from PowerPoint that were needed for the experiment.
Procedure
Briefly explain who conducted the interviews (trained students), how interviews were conducted, identify if in-person, phone, computer…, questions asked, and how the responses were coded (the 3 different categories, with explanation). Use PowerPoint directions and explanation.
Results
Write a few sentences that reports the data from Lab 6 PowerPoint (slide 42): include the total number of coded sentences, sample size, and the percent of sentences coded for each category for the 3-5 age group, 8-10 age group, and 13-15 age group.
Discussion
In a few sentences, discuss what the results from the PowerPoint show regarding how children at different ages describe their friends. Also address what can we conclude about childhood friendships based on the results and Piaget’s Staged Theory? Then, discuss design limitations. That is, write down how you think could the experiment be improved?
