1. Community History

Select one community (village or town), other than Anchorage, within a region of Alaska of interest to you and write a community profile paper. Be sure to discuss the community’s population, location in Alaska, economy, types of jobs available, community events, health care, etc. Discuss how the communities’ demographic information and health concerns (diabetes, obesity, cancer rates) are tied to nutrition, (i.e. poverty and poor nutritional food intake) and how incorporating aspects of a traditional Alaska Native diet may affect (both positively and negatively) the community and its health concerns. Directions: Use data from sources such as the US Census Bureau, State of Alaska, the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center, and many others.
Discuss the following: 1. Community History and Demographics: Describe the village or town’s history and demographics including population size, race, gender, location in Alaska, jobs available, economy (e.g., income, unemployment rate, etc. – hint: bestplaces.net is a good resource), available healthcare (i.e., What healthcare is in the area? Can they receive all care there or do they have to travel somewhere for more serious conditions? If so, where do they go?), and significant community events. Please note that the cultural group you choose is likely in many geographical areas of Alaska (including urban areas). Choose whichever community you prefer and focus on one particular Alaska Native cultural group in that community. Make sure you address each piece/question listed in this section. It’s important to give the reader a good picture of this area. (20 points)
 2. Food Intake: Describe your cultural group’s past food consumption patterns and contrast it with their present food consumption patterns. Discuss food availability with cost of food analysis. Also, are there differences among older and younger generations in terms of traditional food intake (answer this question whether there are differences or not)? (20 points)
3. Nutrition Profile: Describe any prevalent health concerns of the community (i.e. diabetes, obesity, cancer, etc.) that are related to nutrition. Discuss how the community demographics are affected by these health concerns (i.e., longevity, employment, healthcare costs, etc). Looking at the Alaska Native Epicenter data sheets may be helpful. (20 points)
