Assessment Details

Summative assessment
An Essay of 3000 words is required for your ONE summative assessment in this Module.

The essay has 2 elements:
1-    Given all the topics (with prescribed reading materials) and case studies
covered this term, which aspects would most inform your understanding that ‘management can be messy’.
This is a specific look at what causes the complexity of the middle manager role.
2-    Give a clear and evidenced summary of which skills and abilities you understand to be key for the
Successful management of
A)   a middle manager’s teams, notably their subordinates AND
B) their relationship with other stakeholders both internal and external to their firm.

The essay should have roughly 2 equal elements as regards the word counts ie. 1500
for part 1 and part 2. A maximum of 200 words up or down for each section is acceptable but no more than that.
 Ie. 1300 and 1700.

NB! The marking will be heavily weighted towards the inclusion of regular references to theory and academic
content such as that found in each weekly playlist.
In addition, given the nature of this module, you are welcome, but NOT required, to include two short real-life
examples (and NO more) of any personal experience and practice you have.
Those unable to do so are welcome to refer back to the class case studies and insights derived there from. Here
too, no more than 2 examples.

A)    Given all the topics (with prescribed reading materials) and case studies covered this term…. This means:  Look at ALL the topics covered through ALL the materials you have been required to engage with so you have the broadest amount of material and knowledge to base your answers on
B)    which aspects would most inform your understanding that ‘management can be messy’…. This means: Of all the topics we have covered, through all the listening / watching and reading you have done, which models, theories, discussions have made you understand best just how complex the middle manager role can be in real life…
C)    As the question states clearly, Question 1 is a specific look at what causes the complexity of the middle manager role. This means: you have multiple elements to consider ranging from- the structure of the company and department; the impact of the external environment on their company and through to their role; the type of leadership or management the middle manager themselves are subject to; the organizational culture they work within; the leadership they strive to offer; the difficulties of creating clear communication and dealing with corporate communication that may be at odds with them; the spectrum of objectives and stakeholders they owe action to.

1- Give a clear and evidenced summary of which skills and abilities you understand to be key to the successful management of … This means: There is a lot contained here so let us break it down.
Clear and evidenced summary – This requires you to write succinctly with a clear idea of the KEY points you wish to get across. ALL points need to be based on good academic evidence, wherever you choose that to come from. Work by the rule that EVERY POINT YOU MAKE NEEDS A REFERENCE.
of which skills and abilities you understand to be key – You are being asked to specifically look at what you consider to be essential skills and abilities of the middle manager themselves.  Consider the multiple lists of these which have been listed in the pecha kuchas and slide decks for all the subjects covered – from leadership through to conflict management. Eg. What does the manager possess within themselves, or need to develop through training to allow for effective communication, good stress management, the ability to resolve conflict and so on.
to the successful management of – Here you need to step back and reflect on what you have understood to be successful management … given the complexities and the constraints of such a role, what can be considered to be ‘successful management’? You may wish to do some further searches into current academic literature to aid your view.
2- A) A middle manager’s teams, notably their subordinates – This is inward looking , specifically at the most immediate people the manager deals with on a daily basis
3- B) their relationship with other stakeholders both internal and external to their firm.- This is much broader and looks at the possible full gamut of relationships, responsibilities and obligations the manager needs to cater to

Please ensure there are two case studies relating to this.
