Students are to write a 8-10 page paper on an identified best practice of language development and early literacy development. How the teaching assists native English speakers who have a language based disability or are “at risk” for a language based disability. Also, if they are a struggling reader or an English Language Learner. Students are to identify and research a language based disability or area of language or literacy struggle. This should be for children in grades 1-6 may have.
Then, identify and research the English Language Arts best practice, teaching technique, or educational program that can help children with this disability or struggle. You need to then write a paper explaining the practice, technique or program. Describe the area of language learning it helps. Also, discuss the students that would benefit most from it. Lastly, state how it can be used in school classrooms, or tutoring programs. Types of language based disabilities or language or literacy struggles would include:
Receptive and expressive language disorders, social communication issues, dyslexia, phonics struggles, pragmatics issues, and speech issues. Some suggestions of programs would be Orton-Gillingham, Wilson’s Fundation, Lindamood Bell’s Visualizing and Verbalizing, Preventing Academic Failure, Words Their Way, Sheltered English, Phonemic Awareness and Phonics, Four Blocks Literacy, Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading/Leveled Books, Structured Language and Rebecca Sitton’s Spelling.
