Emma, Wuthering Heights, and Jane Eyre

 Jane Eyre iby Charlotte Brontë, Emma by Jane Austen, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë’s The essay should focus on how each author uses the first chapter to establish tone, characters and/or character relationships, setting, and conflict. You should note any similarities you see in the three chapters–these similarities could be in writing style, characters, tone (or any other of those elements discussed in chapter 11). Use the “A Few Good Terms” list to help you think of connections. For example, you could focus an entire essay on how each author uses tone and setting in the first chapter of the novel. There might be some similarities you see in those three chapters in tone and setting. For a different focus, you could discuss how the characters are developed and how conflict is introduced. Don’t feel as if you have to discuss *all* aspects for this short essay. Choosing one or two as a “thread” or focus for your paper will allow you to go into more depth and have a sharper focus.
