You will be responsible for watching at least two of the following four films on your own outside of the class. This assignment requires that you view at least two of the following films and examine them from a buddhist perspective: • Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring (dir. Kim Ki-duk, 2003) • Departures (dir. Yojiro Takita, 2009) • Cloud Atlas (dir. The Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer, 2012) • Paths of the Soul (dir. Zhang Yang, 2015 By ″from a buddhist perspective,″ we mean with reference to the Buddhist concepts that we have been discussing this class. You must use at least TWO of the following buddhist concepts to analyze the films: -samsara -dukkha -dependant arising -non duality -emptiness -impermaneance -nirvana -buddhist concept of the universe In doing this you are free to examine subject matter, characters, plot, narrative structure, sound track, a particular scene or scenes, dialogues, or visuals. The paper will be evaluated for clarity, use of specific examples, and strength of argument. No late papers will be accepted for grading. We encourage going to the writing center to make sure the paper is polished and well-written.
