The assignment: write a paper that analyzes and interprets work by one or two of the nineteenth-century American poets we have read this semester. Requirements: at least 5 and no more than 7 pages (approximately 1500 to 1600 words), double-spaced, typed, documentation of any sources cited (MLA). Your paper should have a good title (that is, a title that indicates the topic and your approach to it—“Paper #1” or “Topic #12” are not good titles), be coherently organized and well written, and be free of errors including typos, misspellings, etc. Cite the poetry by the page number on which the quoted lines appear. If it is a short poem on one or two pages, just include the page number(s) the first time you cite the poem or lines from it. Include a works cited page that lists all the sources you cite in MLA format. You are not required to cite other secondary sources, but you are welcome to if you use them to support your argument. All citations must be documented in MLA format—if you have questions about that, please ask me any time. THE TOPIC CHOSEN (Topic #10): Write an essay that compares Poe’s “The Raven” to Whitman’s “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking.” How does each poet use a bird to express the main topic of his poem? How does Poe’s “mechanical” or “mathematical” form compare to Whitman’s “organic” form as it is manifested by their symbolic birds?
